Celebrities Going Back To School

On average most people go to university in order to further their education in the hope it’ll lead to better career roles, higher wages and success. So, forgive us if we at Ahlan! find it slightly strange when successful, and rich, celebrities decide to go back to school and back into the education system when they’ve already made it. Confused like us? Meet the stars who just love to learn…

Natalie PortmanSubject: PsychologyWhy go back: Natalie’s one of those rare child stars that actually turned out good. Not only has she managed to avoid scandals – aside from the slight issue of her pregnancy out of wedlock, of course – but she has remained grounded. Largely because her parents, who were strict disciplinarians, ensured she concentrated on her studies before her acting. As such the multi-lingual star – she speaks five languages – was determined to finish her education. In 1999 she enrolled at Harvard University, the same year she was cast in the Star Wars franchise. The actress successfully combined her studies with her career, making blockbuster hits including Cold Mountain along the way. She graduated in 2003.

Tyra BanksSubject: BusinessWhy go back: The 37-year-old is a successful model, former Victoria Secret’s ambassador, creator and host of hit show America’s Next Top Model and set up production company Bankable Productions over seven years ago, yet Tyra recently enrolled at Harvard University. And while there she’s decided to ditch her celeb persona and muck in with the rest of the students, living in a dorm!

The model explains, “I feel I have to in order to grow my business. People like Sir Richard Branson and Walt Disney have created these brands and businesses from scratch. I want to grow my company.”

“We live in dorms. I have my own room but we share a kitchen, living room and study area. It’s mandatory dorms. I freaked out. In the beginning I was like, ‘Oh yes, I’m going to Harvard and I’ll be at the Four Seasons down the street.’ And they were like, ‘Girl, you’re living in dorms!’”

James FrancoSubject: EnglishWhy go back: James just can’t seem to get enough of school. Despite boasting a diploma in Fine Arts and degrees in English and Film he’s decided to study for a doctorate at Yale University. And so dedicated is he to his studies he missed this year’s Oscar nominations in order to attend class.A source said, “He snubbed an invite from the movie’s bosses to join them for a breakfast party in New York because he hates missing his lectures.” James confirmed, “I’m not gonna miss class. Fox Searchlight asked me if I’d go to New York in case that I was nominated. I said no.” Swot!

Steven SpielbergSubject: FilmWhy go back: Steven’s decision to go back to education is the most confusing. Before becoming an award-winning director he failed twice to enrol into two prestigious film schools. Instead he began a full-time, unpaid intern at Universal Studios where he learned his tricks of the trade. His second feature film Jaws (1975) garnered him major awards and recognition – Steven has since become one of the most iconic directors of all time. Yet the ET creator still felt he should study and in 2002 he completed his film degree – eight years after gaining an honorary degree!
