Like many others in India, I have been a keen follower of CNN-IBN, a popular TV channel. At the end of each year, it is customary for them to announce awards to achievers of excellence in different categories. I was delighted to see that on December 16, at a glittering function, Dr.Varghese Kurien was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. It was moving to see the old man still graceful and sprightly for his age, as he had become 90 only a few weeks ago.
Known popularly as “Indias Milkman”, Dr. Kurien was the person who ushered in what was called the White Revolution. As the Founder of Amul, which has become such a huge brand in India today, Dr. Kurien “changed the lives of 15 million farmers families” through his co-operative venture called the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation. This is the largest milk selling milk producer in the world
To really appreciate his achievement, we must remember that in 1949 when he first reached Anand, in Gujarat, aged 28, India was in its infancy, having attained Independence only two years earlier. Today, the organization he founded produces over 20 million litres of milk per day.
Amul has become a household name in India and many of us love their advertisements which reflect our times. They were started by DaCunha Associates way back in 1966. Over the years we have followed them closely and look forward eagerly to every new Amul advertisement. The Amul girl has found a place in our hearts just as Dr. Kurien has found a place in the hearts of millions of Indians.
