Dr. Kurien, India’s Milkman

Like many others in India, I have been a keen follower of CNN-IBN, a popular TV channel. At the end of each year, it is customary for them to announce awards to achievers of excellence in different categories. I was delighted to see that on December 16, at a glittering function, Dr.Varghese Kurien was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. It was moving to see the old man still graceful and sprightly for his age, as he had become 90 only a few weeks ago.

Known popularly as “Indias Milkman”, Dr. Kurien was the person who ushered in what was called the White Revolution. As the Founder of Amul, which has become such a huge brand in India today, Dr.

Sun will come out for Riverbend

For elementary students, producing a play can be a great learning experience.

For the students at Riverbend Elementary School in Yuba City, performing “Annie Jr.” isn’t just a learning experience in acting, directing, lighting and staging. It also a chance to learn about the Great Depression.

They will perform “Annie Jr.” on Tuesday.

“I let the kids decide on what play to perform,” said director Michele Wright. “They had seen a couple of movies about the Depression era, and were really looking at history. They also wanted to do a musical, so ‘Annie Jr.’ was perfect.”

“Annie Jr.” is largely the same play as “Annie,” albeit shorter and with some of the darker elements of the story toned down for younger performers.

Books: Book Review: Bill Maher: The New New Rules

Few public personalities care less about what the public thinks of them than Bill Maher. The most recent proof: The subtitle of his new book, The New New Rules: A Funny Look At How Everybody But Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass. Its hyperbole, of course, meant to draw attention. And Mahers New Rules, the best segment of his HBO show Real Time, deserves the attention. Whether hes proposing a new rule about teaching intelligent design or discussing the evolution of condiment containers, Maher is damned funnyand generally right.

Mahers humor plays off the shortcomings of American politics, culture, and religion, and theres no shortage of those. The unrepentant maker of Religulous argues against organized religion at every turn: New Rule: If churches dont have to pay taxes, they also cant call the fire department when they catch fire Ill use the fire department I pay for.
